Healthy Living Initiative

The Healthy Living Initiative, sponsored by Kraft Foods Inc. (Kraft), is a health education program focused on promoting better nutrition, increased physical activity and emotional health for African American women and their families. The program is a response to the prevalence of obesity in the African American community where, according to the American Obesity Association, 78 percent of Black women are overweight. We can decrease these numbers together! The Black Women's Health Imperative and Kraft want to be your resource for creating a positive and healthy lifestyle change.

To help jump-start the initiative, you will find within the Healthy Living channel information and tools to help you:

  • Eat Right!
  • Get Fit!
  • Be emotionally well!
  • And, loads of self-care resources!

To help bring the Healthy Living Initiative to local communities, the Imperative and Kraft will offer interactive health education sessions in select locations. The sessions will focus on the benefits of physical activity, nutrition and emotional health and their affects on weight management and obesity in Black Women.

Participants will learn how to prepare healthier food choices and get moving through physical activity including participation in a citywide Walking for Wellness™ event (Summer 2008). Program pilots are underway in Chicago and Atlanta with community-based organizations who share our commitment to helping Black women better understand how nutrition and physical activity can improve overall health.
