Health Communications Intern
The Black Women's Health Imperative (Imperative) is currently seeking a Health Communications Intern. The Imperative is the only national organization focused solely on promoting optimal physical, emotional and spiritual health for Black women. Successful applicants will be motivated, responsible and self-starters. Applicants should be interested in women's health issues in minority communities, particularly health promotion, education and disparities. We are especially interested in applicants with backgrounds or experience in: mass communications (particularly journalism), public policy, public health, public relations, marketing or English.
The selected intern will work closely with staff members on the following:
- Updating Web site information, e-newsletters and news stories.
- Researching health-related policies, statistics, facts and information.
- Supporting outreach programs and public awareness campaigns.
- Managing and organizing news, collateral and photo archives.
- Maintaining pages on social networking sites, such as MySpace, FaceBook and Bebo.
- Writing, editing and proofreading marketing and communications collateral.
- Assisting with planning special events, podcasts and teleconferences.
- Monitoring health news and organizing news clippings.
The intern will also be asked to support the administrative functions of the organization. This may include arranging and supporting meetings, assisting with correspondence, updating the contact database and overseeing production and mailing of materials.
Qualifications
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Knowledge of AP Style preferred.
- Keen attention to detail when proofreading, copyediting or fact-checking.
- Strong research skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
How to Apply
We are now accepting applications for the Fall 2008 semester. There is a minimum commitment of 14 hours per week for the semester. Work schedule is flexible. Internships may be paid or unpaid positions. We are willing to work with colleges and universities to arrange academic credit, if unpaid.
